How Do They Grow?

Bigger Pumpkins…Ways to Grow Food Better Goals of Great Pumpkin Commonwealth!

Pittsburgh Monster Pumpkins Festival is proud to partner with Great Pumpkin Commonwealth (GPC) and Pennsylvania Giant Pumpkin Growers Association

The GPC cultivates the hobby of growing giant pumpkins throughout the world by establishing standards and regulations that ensure quality of fruit, fairness of competition, recognition of achievement, fellowship and education for all participating growers and weigh-off sites.

In partnership with the Pittsburgh Monster Pumpkins Festival, the group, along with member chapters in New York, Michigan and the Pennsylvania Giant Pumpkin Growers Association (PGPGA), is lending its support and providing help to stage activities, grow and secure the necessary pumpkins that will be used in Pittsburgh—soon to become one of the largest festivals of its kind on the east coast.

A primary purpose of the group? To attract new growers and advance giant pumpkin growing as a sport/hobby throughout the world. The Commonwealth works diligently to educate the public about successful techniques and new products available to advance and improve the organic process.

About the PGPGAPGPGA logo

The PGPGA originated from a group of local growers in Altoona , PA , who staged their first competition, the Pumpkin Bowl, in 1991. Within a few years, the event grew so large and popular, it had to be moved outdoors and became an official weigh-off site of the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth. Today, the weigh-off is held on the first Saturday in October each year and attracts growers from the tri-state and beyond.  It awards a total prize purse of approximately $3,000 for giant pumpkins, squash, field pumpkins, long gourds, tomatoes, watermelons and bushel gourds.

Association members perform countless hours of volunteer work to help facilitate fall celebration events and showcase award winning pumpkins, fruits and vegetables regionally.  The club relies on fundraising to assist growers with bringing gaping exhibits to festivals such as Pittsburgh Monster Pumpkins Festival, and to help advance the science, techniques and fun of giant pumpkin growing.
